European control of 120 miles long Suez Canal was a significant strategic strength for Europe to control transportation of both military and civilian ships from Asia to Europe. It made Muslims countries in general and the Ottomans Empire in particular at risk. As a result, the construction of a railway to the Hejaz became a strategic priority for the Ottoman Empire. The total length of the track from Damascus to Madinah was 820 miles. Abdulhamid was adamant that the railway serve as a symbol of Muslim might and solidarity: this rail line would facilitate religious pilgrimages for all Muslims, not just Ottomans.

A plaque on the wall of the building covers the Zamzam well in one of the Hijazi monuments. The event honours a donation from Saudi King Abd al-Aziz in 1345 A.H. (1926 A.D.).
